Fire breaks out on Thailand tourist hotspot Phi Phi Island

A huge fire has broken out on Phi Phi Island in Thailand, a popular tourist hotspot.

One witness said she saw five hotels and hostels up in flames, with the blaze “spreading like wildfire”.

The witness said she saw people being carried around with burns.

Local media reports a gas cylinder explosion is believed to have started the fire, which started in a hotel, and two people were reportedly injured.

The Phuket News says tourists and residents were evacuated to safer areas, which included the beach.

Multiple local reports say the fire started in a hotel at Soi Slinky about 9.30pm local time (3.30am Wednesday NZ time), before quickly spreading to more than 20 other nearby shopfronts, including restaurants and hostels
